 The Hypocritical Gambling Laws

Jon White observes the obvious

Did you buy a lottery ticket today?

If you did, whether you realize it or not, you just participated in something known as “gambling”. For various, ill-stated reasons, the state and federal government has participated in making the practice of gambling illegal, while performing the very same act themselves.

This is known as a double standard. Or if you want an analogy, you could deem this despicable action as “do as I say, but not as I do”.

Gambling has been with the human race for a very long time. It is estimated that upwards of 600 Billion dollars per year is spent each year in the United States on gambling alone.

Local and federal governments have routinely intervened in consensual gambling transactions between individuals over the past century.

Nevermind, that in almost every situation, the parties at hand:

1. Agree to gamble
2. Generally understand that an inherit risk is involved.
3. Do so out of either wishful thinking, or for simple fun.

It is an absolute absurdity, that the state makes very large sums of money on a daily basis, not only through the lottery, but some states generate money through river boat gambling, horse betting, and other methods.

For the state to claim that that they are “protecting people” from gambling, is basically claiming that they feel the population is stupid, and cannot function without their "so called" guidance and wisdom.

In reality, I think the state realizes that the average person can make a large sum of money, by setting up a bingo hall, or perhaps a poker parlor, or by putting slot machines in their establishment.     Churches can benefit from gambling, as can social organizations, and fundraising ventures.

Now, of course, if you give the state a cut (think mafia) they might let you in the action, but they have to approve you first.

So, why is gambling illegal?     I'm not positive, but I will take a stab.

1.   The state HATES the type of money that might not be easily trackable.   Basically, if you gamble in your house for example, and Uncle Sam can't tax it, that tends to make him very angry.

2.   The state and federal government has a need to redistribute your income, which is basically stealing, so that they can spend it on wars you don’t approve of, give it to already rich companies (corporate welfare), perhaps spend it for gigantic baseball fields, or monuments in Washington DC, among hundreds of other things.

3.    States claim that gambling is immoral, and can lead to things like drug pushing, and prostitution, and some even rally against it for very unclear religious reasons.   Nevermind, that many of those who propogate these bills, including, senators, congressmen, and others, have routinely participated in supposedly some, or all, of these "immoral" activities themselves.   (Elliot Spitzer anyone?)

So why is gambling illegal?     Who knows.

But if anything in this world is immoral, it is limiting the freedom of human beings!

It has been said that you statistically have a better chance of being struck by lightning, then winning a state lottery. Yet, everyday, hard working Americans from all walks of life spend their paychecks on state sponsored lottery tickets.

Of course, you have no idea if the government is gaming the system or not.

(which is another part of the rationale they use for gambling being illegal)

If you ask the average person how much they have spent on the lottery, and what their return has been, they will laugh, and say, well, I have lost more than I have made!

So, it should be obvious, that the state’s argument of protecting people, holds little to no weight, when they engage in the same exact tactic they spend countless hours legislating against.

Not to mention, that if you gambled locally, at a pool hall, or at a bingo parlor, your chances of actually getting a return on your investment, would be much higher!

I mean, do you think your chances of winning would be greater if you bet against 1,000,000 plus people, or, 100 people?

Of course, if you have any brains at all, you would invest your money against 100 people, rather than 1,000,000 plus.

The real question here, is a question of liberty, and a question of the state intervening in the lives of their citizens. As long as you are not hurting anyone else, you should be free to spend your money, or lose your money, however you please.

Thankfully, there are a few people in Congress fighting on our behalf. Ron Paul and Barney Frank, recently introduced a bill labeled HR 2046, which you can read about HERE.

Sadly, this bill only deals with Internet Gambling, which is subject I will not get started on today. However, if you believe in freedom, and not government socialism, you should be free to choose what you do with your hard earned dollars.

Anytime you hear a government bureaucrat grumbling about gambling, pick up the phone and call them, email them, or write to them, and let them know that they are violating freedom and liberty.

Let these people know that you are intelligent, and that they should be working to protect your right to do what you please with the fruits of your labor, rather than regulating your actions, and outright stealing from you.    (while engaging in gambling themselves)

Afterall, the more laws you let the government pass, the more freedom you lose.

Freedom is something you have to fight tooth and nail for, and the founders of this country tried hard to educate us on this fact.

If you choose to lose your freedom of choice, and your freedom of financial expression, you have no one to blame but yourself.
